InsideHigherEd reports that in the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, the University of Northern Colorado posts pictures of people officially banned from their campus. Apparently not all of the folks on this list are “hardened criminals.” The school’s newspaper points out that none of the crimes these people received persona non grata status for are listed and hence a their supposed threat cannot be adequately assessed. Privacy issues are one thing, the actual efficacy of such lists another.

The tragic and senseless act that occured yesterday at one of our nation’s universities will remain in our memories for a long time. It is events like these that leave us with great despair and profound skepticism in human nature. We feel as though we cannot escape Evil.

But it is also in moments such as these that we must affirm the greatness of humanity. Those who passed, those who must be remembered by us for who they were and who they strove to become. We must remember that man is and always be the creator of his own life. Those who destroy it, will be forgotten. Those whose creations add to the wealth of mankind we honor. In those we find life. In those we find Good again and again. It is that Good which makes them immortal to us, their creations of life which strengthen our conviction that we can choose the right path. Good is defined by those who embody it, not by those who lack it.
